100% of Cumberland County Home Support Workers Vote to Strike

Cumberland County, Nova Scotia – Home support workers represented by CUPE 3953 from the Victorian Order of Nurses of Cumberland County voted in favour of a strike mandate, with 100% of those who voted authorizing a strike. “We’re proud to join the rest of the CUPE home support workers by voting in favour of the strike, but we’re disappointed it’s come to this,” said CUPE 3953 President Kelly Forbes-Leblanc. “We’ve been fighting since 2023 for a fair deal, for acknowledgment of our pivotal place in the health care system, but government and our employer continue to ignore us.” Home support is a vital part of the health care system, allowing seniors to stay in their home longer before moving to long term care, and those in acute care to return home without fear that they will lose out on the care they need. Convention Bulletin: Day 4

Delegates had a lot to accomplish on the final day of our 61st annual convention, with debate and discussion on resolutions and elections for the positions of President and Recording-Secretary on the division executive, and an address from Jennifer Benoit, Provincial Coordinator with the Nova Scotia Health Coalition. Emily MacNeil was acclaimed as Recording-Secretary, and delegates elected Alan Linkletter as the next President of CUPE Nova Scotia! With Alan’s seat vacated, elections were held for Vice President and delegates elected Nelson Scott of Local 5050 as Vice-President! Elections were also held for two Area Vice President positions and Ann Marie Danch of Local 5047 was elected as Vice President by the central area caucus and Lauren McKenzie of Local 3912 was elected as Alternate. Convention Bulletin: Day 3

Today was a very exciting and packed day at CUPE Nova Scotia convention! Starting with a breakfast sponsored by the National Officers, where National Secretary Treasurer Candace Rennick and National President Mark Hancock discussed the recent federal election with delegates. Donna Van Kroonenburg’s delivered her report as CUPE Nova Scotia Secretary Treasurer, followed by Candace Rennick, who delivered her report as National Secretary Treasurer. Sister Rennick spoke to delegates about the historic budget implemented this year, and the exciting member-led priorities being implemented at the national union. Sarah Ryan, Research Officer at the national union presented Understanding Artificial Intelligence: A guide for CUPE members to delegates, covering the different ways artificial intelligence can impact our jobs and our workplaces.
