Convention Bulletin: Day 4

Delegates had a lot to accomplish on the final day of our 61st annual convention, with debate and discussion on resolutions and elections for the positions of President and Recording-Secretary on the division executive, and an address from Jennifer Benoit, Provincial Coordinator with the Nova Scotia Health Coalition.

Emily MacNeil was acclaimed as Recording-Secretary, and delegates elected Alan Linkletter as the next President of CUPE Nova Scotia!

With Alan’s seat vacated, elections were held for Vice President and delegates elected Nelson Scott of Local 5050 as Vice-President!

Elections were also held for two Area Vice President positions and Ann Marie Danch of Local 5047 was elected as Vice President by the central area caucus and Lauren McKenzie of Local 3912 was elected as Alternate.

The southern area caucus elected Christa Sweeney of Local 2859 as Vice President and elected Miriah Drever of Local 2859 as Alternate.

Many locals also pledged donations to the CUPE NS solidarity assistance fund, and with local donations being matched by CUPE Nova Scotia, a total of $28,000 was added to the solidarity assistance fund!

The following resolutions were brought to the floor:

  • #8 Push the government to increase spending on education and to increase the number of support staff – CARRIED
  • #14 Protest the changes that are coming to classifications and the new classifications that are being created – CARRIED
  • #7 Continue to lobby the Nova Scotia government to stop violence in ALL workplaces – CARRIED
  • #15 Endorse and join the Justice for Workers campaign for emergency measures that put workers and communities first – CARRIED
  • #2 Continue to fight privatization with information sharing both with its members and with the general public – CARRIED
  • #4 Lobby the provincial government and School Centres for Education to end violence in schools – CARRIED
  • #11 Lobby the Government to stop the harassment of employees by their employer – CARRIED
