Convention Bulletin: Day 3

Today’s Convention proceedings started out with a presentation from the Political Action Committee. Members discussed building momentum to bring NS Power back under public ownership, building CUPE district councils across the province, and getting involved in the political process.  Following the discussion, delegates discussed some constitutional resolutions. We were then joined by David Etherington, Communications Coordinator at the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, who spoke about the importance of electing working people to the halls of power, and made a fundraising pitch for CUPE member Trevor Poirier, president of Local 2031 Foyer Père Fiset and NSNDP candidate in Chéticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay. Click here to make a donation to Trevor’s campaign — you’ll receive a tax credit worth 75% of any amount you donate under $1000. From Public Care Workers to the Public: An Open Letter to Nova Scotians

This letter was originally published on the Long Term and Community Care website. Being open and honest with the communities we serve is something we’re in favour of. However, spreading misinformation, confusing the public, and … Read more…

Convention Bulletin: Day 2

The second day of CUPE Nova Scotia’s 62nd annual convention opened with a smudging ceremony led by Ty Loppie, Local 1082 member and member of the CUPE Atlantic Maritimes Indigenous Council. On the convention floor, proceedings started with a toast to public water, led by Local 227 workers. The morning brought remarks from CUPE Nova Scotia Division President Alan Linkletter, who took delegates on a whirlwind tour through his first year in the role, celebrating our successful charter challenge which found former Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil’s draconian anti-labour legislation Bill 148 to be unconstitutional. Delegates also heard from CUPE National President Mark Hancock, who encouraged delegates to take heart in how our provincial struggles fit into the national picture. Midday, delegates took to the streets to demonstrate outside of Premier Tim Houston’s speech to the Halifax Chamber of Commerce at the Nova Centre. Hundreds of delegates and CUPE Long-Term … Read more…
