CUPE Nova Scotia kicked off the first day of our 60th convention with sector meetings in the afternoon. The convention was officially opened at 7pm by President Nan McFadgen, who warmly welcomed the largest number of delegates CUPE Nova Scotia has ever hosted for a Convention. Nan then introduced Brian Knockwood, who offered a special Indigenous welcome to delegates. Members who have passed away in the last year were honoured with a moment of silence. Then, members of the credentials committee shared their day one numbers with the room.
Delegates were addressed on behalf of CAMIC (CUPE Atlantic Maritime Indigenous Council) by Kim Loppie, followed by CUPE Nova Scotia’s executive board members sharing their annual reports.
CUPE Local 8920 President Bev Strachan introduced Melissa Marsman of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, who spoke at length about several important issues, like anti-scab legislation, improved wages and benefits, better pensions and affordable childcare.
President Nan McFadgen then finished the night off with announcements to the room, followed by an adjournment for the day.
