2025 William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day

On Wednesday, June 11th, CUPE Nova Scotia observes the 100th anniversary of William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day, which recognizes and honours the sacrifices made in the struggle for workers’ rights. The date is named for a miner who was killed while courageously protesting against the anti-worker actions of the British Empire Steel Corporation during a 1925 strike near New Waterford. We encourage members to attend Davis Day ceremonies being held today (details below), and to reflect on the significance of the sacrifices made. New Waterford 10:00 AM: Memorial Service at Calvin United Church, 420 Hudson Street. 11:00 AM: Wreath Ceremony & Special Guest Speakers at Davis Square, Mining Memorial, 3453 Baker Avenue. 12:00 PM: Lunch Reception at Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans Unit 217, 495 Smith Street. Springhill 1:00 PM: Ceremony at the United Church, 86 Main Street (includes wreath-laying).
