Convention Bulletin: Day 4

Convention reconvened today with some encouraging news — Long Term Care workers would head back to the bargaining table with the province at 1 PM. Delegates were joined this morning by Rod Wilson, NSNDP Health Critic and long-time family doctor, who has visited every LTC picket line in the province since the strike began. Jennifer Benoit from the Nova Scotia Health Coalition brought delegates’ attention to the many issues facing our public health care system, and encouraged members to join the efforts to lobby the federal and provincial governments to expand and protect these vital services. CUPE NS Division President Alan Linkletter announced that the All-Committees meeting at Digby Pines from October 5-8th will welcome delegates from Newfoundland and Labrador as well. Convention Bulletin: Day 3

Today’s Convention proceedings started out with a presentation from the Political Action Committee. Members discussed building momentum to bring NS Power back under public ownership, building CUPE district councils across the province, and getting involved in the political process.  Following the discussion, delegates discussed some constitutional resolutions. We were then joined by David Etherington, Communications Coordinator at the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, who spoke about the importance of electing working people to the halls of power, and made a fundraising pitch for CUPE member Trevor Poirier, president of Local 2031 Foyer Père Fiset and NSNDP candidate in Chéticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay.
