Right to Refuse

CUPE has been receiving many questions from members who want to know how the current COVID-19 pandemic may affect their right to refuse. As a worker in Nova Scotia, you have the legal right to refuse unsafe work, according to Section 43 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, when there are reasonable grounds to believe that the work condition, equipment, material, or any aspect of the work may be dangerous to you or another person’s health and safety.

COVID-19 Update from CUPE 5047

As I’m sure all Nova Scotian’s have heard, all schools have been closed minimally until April 5, 2020 in an effort to prevent the spreading and as well as the containment of the Coronavirus, known as COVID-19. As stated prior to March Break, we, the Executive of CUPE Local 5047, will update our members as we have solid information, direction and support from CUPE National and its Representatives on an ongoing basis. NSHA Coronavirus Update

(for NSHA employees only) Current situation Nova Scotia Government held a press conference regarding three presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia and additional measures to support virus containment. Full release is available here. Highlights include: Nova Scotia announced the province’s first three presumptive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), today, March 15. The province is also taking further measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The cases are not connected and are travel related. The individuals followed all the proper procedures when they started to feel unwell. Two individuals are in the Halifax Regional Municipality and one is in Kings County. All three are managing their symptoms at home in self-isolation. Public health has been in contact with these individuals and those who have come in close contact with them are also being directed to self-isolate at home, away from the public, for 14 days.
