JUNE 27: Provincial Day of Action for Support Workers in Long-term Care

We all deserve better and that includes support workers in long-term care who are an important part of the “team” that delivers care. By not extending any wage adjustments to all job classifications, the PC government is not recognizing the value these workers provide. This includes dietary and kitchen staff, laundry, maintenance, recreation, and others who work in support positions in nursing homes. CUPE support staff who work in long-term care, their co-workers, and friends, will hold rallies across the province as part of a “Day of Action” on Monday, June 27, calling on the government to increase wages for support staff too. Rallies will take place from 11 am to 1 pm. Talks break off between long-term care workers and Alderwood Rest Home

Talks have broken off between long-term care workers, represented by the CUPE 1635, and their employer, the Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck, NS. CUPE National Representative Tammy Martin says, “After three days of bargaining, we are a long way from reaching a deal. Yet to be resolved are issues around time off, wages, and benefits. The collective bargaining only works if both parties respect the process.” CUPE 1635 President Ashley Aucoin says, “Our members care deeply about the residents they care for, but low wages, long hours, vacation denials, and burn out have taken their toll. We all deserve better – both workers and residents.” Quality long term care is provided by a team of health care staff, and CUPE 1635 proudly represents approximately 80 members who work as continuing care assistants, licensed practical nurses, and in support services such as dietary, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and more.
