Convention 2024 – Day 4 Bulletin

CUPE Nova Scotia President Nan McFadgen opened the fourth and final day of Convention 2024 by making a few announcements to the delegates. First, she shared that the upcoming All-Committees meeting would be held from October 3rd-5th, 2024 at the Inn on Prince in Truro. She also revealed to the room that next year’s Convention will have an exclusively online registration process, and that the convention call would only be sent out to locals via email. Finally, McFadgen reported that the division would arrange a method to purchase the remarkably popular sweatshirts that were initially only available as gifts to delegates in attendance. The credentials committee reported on the morning’s attendance for the final time at Convention, followed by the presentation of the Steward of the Year award to a very deserving recipient, Heather Cameron. Convention 2024 – Day 3 Bulletin

Day 3 of CUPE Nova Scotia’s 2024 Convention began with the Officer’s Breakfast. As delegates enjoyed their meal, CUPE National President Mark Hancock and Secretary Treasurer Candace Rennick spoke to delegates about the dangers that a Pierre Poilievre led government would pose to the labour movement in Canada. On a lighter note, they also gave away prizes to lucky delegates whose names were drawn. CUPE Nova Scotia President Nan McFadgen officially started business for the day by sharing the good news of federal anti-scab legislation finally being passed last night. She also lamented the fact that our provincial government has been reluctant to pass similar legislation of their own. Convention 2024 – Day 2 Bulletin

Convention Day 2 opened with a toast to public water led by Local 1431 and 227 members Jess Haley and Dwayne Bell. CUPE NS President Nan McFadgen then delivered her report, highlighting local, national, and international work undertaken over the course of the past year. McFadgen also spoke to the importance of organizing against the rising tide of the far right and defending workers rights and public services against the attacks being mounted by politicians like Pierre Poilievre, whose preferred policies would spell the beginning of the end of worker power. While we fight back at the bargaining table, McFadgen said we can also fight back in public, through municipal, provincial, and federal political processes, and encouraged members to get involved and consider running for public office at all levels.
